Who’s Simon Wakefield Simon took up golf at the age of 15 and cut his handicap from 26 to 12 in his first season. By the age of 17 he was off scratch. He didn’t have a sparkling amateur career but one of the highlights was winning the Tillman Trophy in 1996 at The London Club. In 1997 he went to the European Qualifying School and gained his full Challenge Tour playing rights. In 2000 he gained his full playing rights on the European Tour and continued that exciting journey until 2015 when he retired. He won the Qualifying School Final Stage in 2010, won the Tessali Open del Sud in 2002 and the Dimension Data Pro-Am at Sun City in South Africa in 2005. Simon played in four Open Championships, 2003, 2004, 2006 & 2008. In 2008 he finished 19th overall and on the Saturday, he played with Sergio Garcia and had the lowest round of the day having briefly challenged for the lead. When he retired in 2015 he went to work for several Golf Events as Coordinator. He worked on the Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup, the biggest amateur corporate golf series in the world. Simon is stateting next concerning golf to Turkey; “Travelled to many places around the world, Turkey is one of his favorite destinations. Belek has some of the most amazing golf courses and with the first-class hotels and Turkish hospitality it’s a place I love going back to.” He enjoys flying and hopes one day to gain his pilot’s license. He comes from a talented sporting family with his uncle Bob Taylor being a former England Test wicketkeeper.
